The North Atlantic Rim Project (NAR)

A cooperative research study of coastline settlements.

Research Focus

Four places, eastern maritime Canada, coastal Norway, Iceland and Ireland, have enough similarities in landscape with some subtle differences as to material resources, climate and culture to make comparisons across them invaluable.

The international study currently underway between the four schools of architecture; the Norwegian University of Science and Technology [Trondheim, Norway], Dalhousie University [Halifax, Canada] and University College Dublin [Ireland] and the School of Architecture and Fine Art in Reykjavik [Iceland] involves architects, university staff  and students in a series of cross cultural studies of the landscapes and architectures of coastal settlements in the North Atlantic. This research began in September 2004 with initial studies undertaken in Norway and Ireland, has continued this year in Reykjavik, Iceland and will conclude in Halifax, Canada in 2006. The project to date has examined natural landscapes, altered landscapes and the historic to contemporary building responses to these conditions.  The work undertaken has considered the critical similarities and differences between these regions and the potential for the reinterpretation of landscape, material resources and technologies from related landscapes and cultures. Further research is pending in this area which will expand to involve both design and built experimentations.
